Luxor
the World's Greatest Open-Air Museum
Luxor
Luxor was once Thebes, the great capital of ancient Egypt. Today it has more ancient monuments than almost any other place on Earth. The Nile divides the city into two sides: the East Bank, the city of the living, and the West Bank, the city of the dead.
On the East Bank, you visit Karnak Temple, the largest temple complex in Egypt, with its forest of giant columns. Luxor Temple is close by, and it is beautiful at night when it is lit up. On the West Bank, enter the painted tombs in the Valley of the Kings, see the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, and stand in front of the Colossi of Memnon.
Luxor is also the start or end point of most Nile cruises to Aswan. Many visitors start their day with a hot air balloon ride over the temples and green fields at sunrise. It is one of the most magical moments of a trip to Egypt.
