Start in Islamic Cairo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you find the Citadel of Saladin, the Mosque of Muhammad Ali and hundreds of old mosques. Walk to Khan El Khalili, a market from the 14th century, to shop for lamps, spices and silver. Nearby, Coptic Cairo shows the city’s Christian history, with the Hanging Church and old Roman walls.
Cairo is also home to great museums. The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square keeps a huge collection of ancient art, and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization shows the Royal Mummies. Most trips to Egypt start here, so Cairo is the perfect first stop before you visit the Pyramids or sail the Nile.
